Our Mission
Archaeological material has a unique power to captivate, resonate, and inspire. At Reconsider Illustration, we try to nurture this sense of connection through the visuals we create. Whether it is recording material on excavations, visualizing archaeological theory, or producing visuals for public exhibitions, we aim to make archaeological material clear, approachable, and thought-provoking.
We further strive to produce and promote an engagement with the past that is conscious of the present: one that works to acknowledge and undo the many historic harms of the archeological past and present. As such, we pledge to make every effort to produce ethical images that are consistent with the values of informed consent, indigenous rights, racial and economic justice, equality, and environmental sustainability.
Why make everything public?
We believe that archeology belongs to everyone. Publication takes a long time and often leaves a lot of people out of the conversation. Moreover, keeping techniques a secret holds everyone back. We feel that it is better to lay everything out in the open: where we get it right, where we get it wrong, and how we got there. When things get published, we'll link it. If we get it wrong, we'll say so! At the heart of this ethos is a simple proposition: a rising tide lifts all boats. The purpose of academic work is to lift everyone up, not just us.
