Embodied Illustration

I've always found archaeological illustrations somewhat frustrating. While the traditional centimeter scale is accurate, it's hard to fit within my own sense of scale. I can never quite gauge how big an object is; I can never quite picture what the object looks like in real life. In this project, I have been trying to illustrate my own hands along with traditional scales, to try to present images in a way that intuitively makes sense. I feel that this style of illustration brings us far closer to the experience of objects than a traditional illustration can.

Archeological objects illustrated in the hand of the researcher.

The Hands Project

Check out the Hands Project: a project to contextualize archeological objects by illustrating them in the hands of owners, underrepresented groups, and the researchers themselves!
